National Cleaver Awards (2020)

National Cleaver Awards is a prestigious recognition for product and service excellence in the South African butchery industry. The competition was launched in 2005 to meet the needs of the consumer by raising standards amongst butcheries and since then these awards have proven to do just that.
For this year’s competition, butcheries were asked to register upfront, resulting in approximately 600 butcheries signing up. Their customers were then given the opportunity to vote for them. All butcheries that received over 100 votes were then anonymously visited by SAMIC, The South African Meat Industry Company, tasked with ensuring the quality and safety of meat in South Africa.
All butcheries were audited against an extensive 212-point checklist and for the first time in the history of the Cleaver Awards, all participating butcheries had the opportunity to view their score sheets, to see where they may have fallen short.
Butcheries competed in the following categories in the 2020 competition:
Arch Retail is applied in many independent butcheries throughout Southern Africa, but also used in butchery departments of leading chains, such as OK Foods, Cambridge Foods, Saverite, President Hyper, RCL Foods, Rhino Cash & Carry, Evergreens and A1 Food.
