Safeguarding Valuable In-store Operational Data

Cybercrime has become part of daily reality, where criminals apply more sophisticated software to defraud unsuspecting targets. Spinnaker does not offer an Arch solution to counter this threat but will refer clients to a reputable service provider. See ‘Alert – Malicious Cyber Attacks’

When it comes to safeguarding valuable in-store operational data, a new more direct enemy has burst onto the scene – the opportunistic criminal looter. The recent tragic events in KZN and Gauteng have caught many retailers off-guard in the sense that in many cases PC equipment was also looted or destroyed in a fire. This resulted in losing data. The following scenarios were in play:

  • Some stores had no data backed-up, thus losing all operational data.
  • Some stores had backups but on site, which were also stolen/destroyed.
  • Some stores had external drive data backups off-site, which requires daily discipline to ensure these are updated and removed off-site daily. This procedure is advisable, but the drive is still at risk where it is kept.
  • Some clients of ours are employing the Redstor cloud backup protection solution, which offers the ultimate convenience and safety when it comes to data protection.

The Redstor solution is implemented as follows:

  • Redstor cloud backup is installed and setup on the server at the store which backs up the SQL Database to an offsite cloud server. The backups are done daily (usually recommended after store-close at a set time).
  • Store management receives a notification on successful and/or failed backups.
  • In the event of a failed backup, the store logs a support call for immediate investigation.

The cloud backup technology offers convenience and peace of mind. After the recent looting subsided, relieved retailers on Redstor lost no operational data.
